STAYING HEALTHY AT THE DUBUQUE Y

UPDATE: March 16, 2020
Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA

Dear Y Members,

The safety and well-being of our members, staff, volunteers and the broader Dubuque community is our priority, now more than ever. Thank you for being part of the Y and for all you are doing to support the greater good, as we all face this unprecedented health challenge.

While there have been no confirmed cases of COVID-19 at any Y facility or within our county, we need to be part of the nationwide effort to slow the spread of the virus. Therefore, per the Governor mandate at 10:30am, we closed our facility for 15 days beginning Tuesday, March 17 at Noon through Tuesday, March 31.

In the midst of this trying time, we must ensure that health care workers, first responders, and essential service providers have the child care needed to do their duties and keep us safe. The Governor and DHS has given us direction and assistance with KEEPING OUR TWO CHILD CARE CENTERS AND SCHOOL AGE CHILD CARE WILL REMAIN OPEN. These facilities will continue to operate as normal until further notice so we are able to continue providing high quality care to the children of our community.

Historically, the Dubuque Y has been a catalyst to distill and put into action the truly incredible Human Spirit. Together, we have activated the capabilities we possess when we join together in our collective efforts to achieve common goals. This is no different.

In the short term, we are committed to shifting our focus and aligning with our community partners, schools, agencies, and businesses to find ways we could serve the Dubuque community and further our mission. We continue to closely monitor this situation and will take advantage of our website, social media channels, and other platforms to keep you updated and engage the community in new ways that will support you in creating a healthy spirit, mind and body. If you have any questions or need additional information, please email reply@dubuquey.org and we will respond as soon as possible.

We ask that you join us in this effort. We ask that you continue to invest in your membership so that we can maintain crucial life-changing, and lifesaving programs at the Y. We will rely heavily on the continued support of members, program participants and donors. If necessary, we will certainly put your membership on hold by filling out this fillable PDF and sending it to ccuroe@dubuquey.org. We will also maintain staff at our Welcome Center who can assist in changing memberships over the phone.

To help you stay healthy in spirit, mind and body during this time, we are offering an on-demand healthy living network called YMCA 360 and live workouts through Les Mills at no charge to all Y members. Content is accessible on the YMCA 360 YouTube Channel at YMCA360.org and Les Mills website. Content will be refreshed frequently and includes programs for kids and families.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank our members for their patience and understanding.

Sincerely,

Tony Calabrese

Dubuque Community Y’s Statement

The Dubuque Community Y is committed to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone who enters our doors. Please know that our staff is monitoring the development and spread of the Coronavirus very carefully using information from well-accredited organizations such as the CDC, Iowa Department of Public Health, government officials, and Iowa YMCA State Alliance. Our Y is regularly cleaned by our wonderful janitorial staff and we know that special care is taken by Y staff to meet quality standards in place year-round that keep our facility clean and safe. We invite you to help ensure we all do our part in helping to prevent the spread of germs and viruses by following the guidelines below and going the extra step of cleaning off your machines before and after your use.

  • Handwashing remains the most effective method of preventing the spread of germs, including coronavirus. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
  • Use the sanitizing stations placed throughout the building.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • If you or a loved one are experiencing flu-like symptoms, including fever, cough and shortness of breath, please stay home, rest and contact your medical provider.

While no one can predict the impact the coronavirus will have on the United States or the Dubuque community, our team at the Y is dedicated to making the best well rounded and strategic decisions for the health and safety of all members. We will continue to update this page with more information as well as our social media pages if any major changes occur.
